Obituary for Lawrence Thomas Green

Mr. Lawrence Green, formerly of Newark, NJ passed away on November 20, 2017 at Tanner Hospital in Villa Rica, GA at the age of 86 years old. He was born on July 28, 1931 in Freehold, NJ to the union of the late Louis and Pattie (Ma Pat) Green. Known affectionately as “Larry”, he attended the Howell Township school system in New Jersey. He was afforded the opportunity to attend the Manual Training and Industrial School in Bordentown, NJ (Also known as the Tuskegee of the North). Some of his outstanding accolades while attending were an avid football player, drum major, carpenter, acapella choir, and many academic achievements. Around that same time, Larry got his barbering license and began cutting hair part time as a way to support himself. Upon graduation in 1952, he attended “Arts High” in Newark, NJ which would later help launch his advertising career. He was soon inducted into the Army where he served for two years as an outstanding soldier. Larry returned to Newark, NJ in 1954 and went to work at “Food Fair Stores Inc.” as the only Afro-American to work in the advertising department. His niche or what he called his “bread and butter” was barbering which he continued to do throughout his life. During this time, he met and married Flora Ann Cook. Of that union were 6 children. Larry was a devoted and loving husband and father. After leaving Food Fair, he went to work for the Newark, NJ school system until his retirement. His church home was “Greater Harvest Baptist Church” of Newark, NJ where he was an ordained deacon. He relocated to Douglasville, GA in 2003 and remained there until his passing.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife “Flo Ann” as he called her, his brother Cleveland M. Green, and his sister Phyllis Green, Son George Green, and Daughter Gwendolyn Aldrich (Richard).
He will be forever remembered and cherished by his four children: Sons Gregory (Julia) of Villa Rica and Glen of Newark, Daughters Gywanna (Paul) of Newark and Vickie of Newark, honorary sons Michael Demps of Villa Rica and Antonio Thompson of Austell, his numerous grandchildren (12), great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, his best friend Norman Harris of Elizabeth, extended family and dear friends.

In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Green’s body was cremated and a Memorial Service will be held Monday, December 11, 2017, at 2:00 P.M. at Hightower’s Memorial Chapel in Douglasville, Georgia. The United States Army will present Military Funeral Honors.
