Obituary for Julia P. Koon

Mrs. Julia P. Koon, age 85, of Douglasville, passed away Wednesday, October 18, 2017. She was born in Rock Mills, Alabama, on December 9, 1931, the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Pike and the late Vesta Cleo Lipham Pike. She managed Sunrise Memorial Gardens in the late ‘70s and enjoyed working with families in their time of need. She was a member of Douglasville First United Methodist Church for 50 years and was a member of the Lively Sunday School Class.
Julia was a loving and out-going person who never met a stranger. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking, coaching softball, doing word and other types of puzzles, and she loved her church. Her most enjoyable passion was her family. She loved genealogy, spoiling her grand kids, and organizing her family’s reunions—which she thoroughly enjoyed attending.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her infant daughter: Susan Joyce Koon; sisters: her twin, Ann Joyce Bowman, and Virginia Pike Houze; and brothers: Euclid Jackson Pike, John Emory Pike, and William James Pike.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years: Arthur James Koon of Douglasville; children: Robert J. Koon of Douglasville, Julie C. Koon of Powder Springs, and Jim Koon and his wife, Pamela, of Douglasville; grandchildren: Maegen Koon and Clayton Koon; sisters-in-law: Marjorie Shores Pike of Springfield, TN, and Marie Harry Pike of Franklin, GA; brother-in-law: Bryan Bowman of Liberty, NC; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends at Hightower’s Memorial Chapel on Friday, October 20, 2017 from 4:00-8:00 P.M.
The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 21, 2017, at Douglasville First United Methodist Church with Reverend Brett DeHart officiating and Dr. David Naglee speaking. Music will be rendered by Mr. Larry McLeod.
Interment will follow in Rock Mills Cemetery, Rock Mills, AL at 4:00 P.M. (EDT).
Pallbearers will be Mike Davis, Ken Rutledge, Lynn Denson, Tim Weaver, David Henderson, and Jody Spain.
The Lively Sunday School and Brotherhood Sunday School classes are asked to serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Jackleg Angels Missions at Douglasville First United Methodist Church, 6167 Prestley Mill Rd, Douglasville, GA 30134, (770) 942-3146.
