Obituary for Jackson Harding 'Nick' Banks

Jackson Harding “Nick” Banks passed away at home surrounded by family on June 20, 2019 at the age of 79.  He was born on November 27, 1939, the only child of Rupert Jackson “Jack” Banks and Lottie O’Rear Banks.
A lifelong resident of Douglasville, Nick was married 56 years to his high school sweetheart, Patsy Lynch, who is now a retired legal secretary.  They have two sons, John Richard Banks (wife Callie) of Portland, Oregon, and Charles Jackson Banks of Douglasville, Georgia.
Nick graduated from Douglas County High School in 1958, received an AB degree from Mercer University in 1962, an LLB from Woodrow Wilson College of Law in 1967.
From 1962 to 1969, he was associate broker with Johnson Land Co.  He served on the Douglasville City Council from 1966 until 1970 and then held a position as City Clerk for Douglasville.  In 1976, he became Douglasville City Manager, a post he held until 1992. After this, he was Comptroller for the city and retired from that position on March 1, 1995.
Mr. Banks served on the Board of Directors of Arlington School in Fairburn, Georgia from 1980 to 1984. From 1980 to 1993, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Commercial Bank and served as vice-chairman of the Douglasville Downtown Development Authority in 1996.
Nick enjoyed listening to classical music, especially live performances, and was an avid reader. After retirement, he organized an investment club he dubbed the “Gravy Train” and enjoyed the comradeship of his buddies in the community who joined him in this endeavor.
Nick’s life was rich in friends, some of whom went as far back as “the sandbox” as he would put it. Whether on vacation trips with another family, at work with the city, or hashing over the latest investment possibilities, he could be counted on to keep everyone laughing.  In fact, Nick will be best remembered for his sense of humor – a dry quick wit that was never far from the surface no matter what the occasion.  He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 23, 2019 from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM at Hightower’s Memorial Chapel.  The funeral service will follow at 4:00 in the chapel with Pastor Gene Fields officiating.
Interment will follow the service in the Douglasville City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tn., 38105, 800-822-6344 or charity of your choice.
